The Cadets Activity and Shooting
The Safe Excursions Team decided to remove the activity of ‘'shooting’' from the Cadets Activity Policy. The other activities of ‘'fieldwork’' and ‘'ceremonial activities’' will remain in the Policy.
We made the decision to remove ‘’shooting’’ because:
- shooting is the only activity in the Policy, and also the Risk Manifest, which carries a ‘'catastrophic’' risk rating
- our research has indicated that this activity has been deemed unsuitable by Education Departments in several jurisdictions to be undertaken by students
- there is a lack of verifiable and accessible information on shooting activities across the States and Territories - which impacts upon how well the research behind the SafeTripBuilder application can help schools to control the risks associated with shooting.
If your school would like to use the Safe Excursions Application to manage an excursion involving shooting in the future, your school can still do so by uploading or linking your school’s own policies or procedures on shooting activities and then selecting an appropriate risk rating.
